Scotland - The Shieling Project

From 7th to 12th July, I was a kids’ camp leader/facilitator for a group of 8-13 year olds. Activities included:

  • Foraging

  • Baking and cooking

  • Willow weaving

  • Bush whacking

  • Supervised fire lighting

East Sussex - Wilderness Wood

On 18th July, I ran a navigation session for 11 13-16 year olds at Wilderness Wood. The session aim was to prepare them for an independent walk with no mobile phones from Crowborough to Wilderness Wood. The navigation session covered:

Map Reading
Scale, Grid References, Keys and Symbols, Contour Lines.

Using a Compass
The different parts of a compass, orientating a map, taking a bearing/setting direction.

Route Finding
Planning a route, measuring legs (distance and time).
What to take with you on a walk/hike.

Activity
Finding hidden objects in the Woods using contour lines.

Working as a Group and Basic First Aid
How to walk in a group and work together to make decisions.
Managing heat exhaustion and hypothermia.
Managing minor cuts and stings.
Calling for help - what information to share with emergency services.
